Looking beyond Firefix, Mozilla announces Aurora browser

“Aurora is intended to serve as a springboard for an open discussion about how to evolve the user experience of the Web browser,” according to Adaptive Path, a San Francisco-based design firm that is developing Aurora for Mozilla Labs.

“Aurora incorporates many innovative design ideas [that] are nuanced, and build on each other in complex ways, so we’ve used each part of the video to show how the concepts work together in specific situations,” the company said.

Firefox 3.0 tips to search your bookmarks and history faster.

With the recent release of Firefox 3 from Mozilla, I’ve been able to play around with some of the cool new features of the browser. It’s definitely faster and has almost 300 new features and improvements built into it.

One of my more favorite features is the new instant search of your Mozilla Firefix bookmarks and web history. They’ve built this feature directly into the address bar, which is super convenient and efficient in terms of design.

If you’re like me, you probably have hundreds, if not thousands, of bookmarks stored on your computer. Half the time, I can’t even remember the sites I bookmarked only a week ago!

Will Greasemonkey work in the new Firefix 3 download?

Greasemonkey is one of the most popular Firefox browser extensions because it gives you so many tools to increase productivity and render websites in your browser. At the time of this writing there is currently not a Greasemonkey extension via the Firefox 3 addons manager or the Mozilla addons website.

All is not lost however:

You can get a working version from the developer’s site. The folks at Download Squad installed the greasemonkey-0.8.20080609.0.xpi into Firefox 3 RC2 on Mac OS 10.5, and their scripts worked like a charm.

Firefix Download Plugin: Add GMail to your browser’s search bar

Lifehacker.au’s “Upgrade Your Life contest winner” comes from Jack M, who submitted a simple but very useful trick: adding Gmail to the search bar in Firefix. Now, if you want to compose an email, you can do it simply by typing the email address into the search bar and hitting return (or clicking the search icon). The plug-in also works in Gnome-do, which is good news for Linux users. Check after the jump for instructions on installing the plug-in.

Installation of the plug-in is very straightforward:

Click on this link (it’s way less spammy than it looks, we promise).
Click on the Open Search plug-in Mail button in the bottom right to install.
Mail will now be available as one of your search options in the Firefox search bar.

Among the higher-profile patches added to RC2 was one that addressed a performance problem in Firefox for Linux. Mozilla made the decision to go with another release candidate last week — rejecting the option of shipping Firefox 3.0 as is, then following up with a bug-fix update later. Mozilla executives assured users that the additional RC would not delay the expected launch date, which has been set for mid-month.

There’s a mountain of improvements in Firefox 3 compared to Firefox 2, many relating to the important issues of security, reliability, and performance … there’s malware protection, a web forgery protection page, checks for add-ons and plugins, protection against cross-site attacks, and the ability to see information about a particular web site simply by clicking on its icon in the location bar. Firefox’s JavaScript engine has been speeded up, and memory leaks (the curse of many a Firefox user) are supposed to be tightened up. Additionally, user data (such as bookmarks, cookies, and preferences) are stored in a more secure database format so that, even if the browser crashes (ha ha) they’ll be protected. Added to these, a whole host of features have been added which are supposed to make FF3 easier to use, including better password management, simplified add-on installation, full page zooming, tab scrolling, and better integration with Windows and Mac OS X operating systems.
